Free tool for cold email

Cold email checker
Will it get a reply, or land in spam?

Paste a subject line and a cold email to check its length, opening, ask and links, the words that can look like spam, leftover template tokens and the way to say no. Free, with no account, and nothing leaves your browser.

The checks run in your browser. What you paste never leaves your device, and nothing is kept.

The checks

Plain code, not a model: the same answer every time, and why.

  • Length

Words before the sign-off. Istos keeps first emails under 130.

  • Subject line

Length, capitals, promotional words, and a fake “Re:” or “Fwd:”.

  • Leftover template tokens

Merge tags and placeholders such as {{first_name}}, [Name] or <company>.

  • Opening line

Warm-ups such as “I hope this email finds you well” or “My name is”.

  • About them or about you

How many sentences are about you (I, we, our) and how many about them (you, your).

  • One clear ask

Questions and calls to action. More than one ask is flagged.

  • Links and attachments

More than one link, shortened links, and files mentioned.

  • Words that can look like spam

A short list of promotional words, runs of exclamation marks, capitals and money signs.

  • An easy way to say no

A plain line that lets them opt out without reaching for the spam button.

Istos drafts first emails this way

The Leads agent writes each first email short, about one thing, with one ask and an opt-out line. Every draft waits in your queue, and nothing sends until you approve it.

How to read the result

Ready to send, a few fixes, or rewrite
Each check says it looks good, is worth a look, or needs a fix, with the reason and what to change. Ready to send means nothing needs a fix and at most one thing is worth a look. Three fixes or more, and it’s quicker to start again.
Length
Istos keeps first emails under 130 words before the sign-off. Boomerang’s 2016 study (opens in a new tab) of over 40 million emails, of every kind, found those of 50 to 125 words got replies most often.
Spam is mostly about the sender
The words are only part of it. Gmail’s sender guidelines (opens in a new tab) ask every sender to set up SPF or DKIM, keep spam reports low, keep headers honest and give people an easy way to unsubscribe. A checker can’t see your address or its history.
An easy way to say no
A plain line at the end turns a reader who isn’t interested into a no, not a spam report. What a good one looks like, and how Istos adds one: How to handle unsubscribe requests in cold email.

Each check is plain code, not a model, so it gives the same answer every time and says why. It reads words, not intent, so a good email can still trip one, and a bad one can pass. The full guide, with a worked example: How to write a first email a founder will answer.

Questions people ask

Will my cold email land in spam?
No checker can promise either way. Where an email lands depends mostly on the address it comes from: whether the domain is set up with SPF and DKIM, its sending history, how many people mark its emails as spam and how many you send at once. Gmail’s sender guidelines ask for all of that. The words play a smaller part. This checks the parts of your words that can look like spam, to filters and to people, so you can fix those.
How long should a cold email be?
Short enough to read on a phone in one go. Istos writes first emails under 130 words before the sign-off, and the checker uses the same line: over 130 is worth trimming, over 200 is too long. Boomerang looked at over 40 million emails in 2016 and found those of 50 to 125 words got replies most often. That was all kinds of email, not only cold ones, so treat it as a guide.
What should the first line of a cold email say?
Who you are and why you’re writing to this person, in a line or two. Mail apps show the first line in the preview, so a warm-up such as “I hope this email finds you well” spends it on words anyone could send.
Should a cold email have an unsubscribe line?
Yes. A plain line such as “If you’d rather not hear from me, reply ‘no thanks’” gives people a way to say no that isn’t the spam button. Gmail’s sender guidelines ask every sender to give people an easy way to unsubscribe, and the rules for cold email differ by country, so check the ones that apply to you.
Should I put links or attachments in a first email?
One link at most, written out in full, such as a booking link. Shortened links hide where they go, and a first email full of links reads like a newsletter. Leave files out: many people won’t open one from someone they don’t know, so offer to send it instead.
Is it free, and do you keep what I paste?
It’s free and needs no account. The checks run in your browser, so the subject and the email you paste never leave your device. Nothing is sent to Istos and nothing is kept. Each check is plain code, not a model, so it gives the same answer every time and says why.
